How to Tackle Hyperpigmentation - Peels

Winter is here and that means it’s the ideal time to get a peel. Not only because it’s completely acceptable to hide in your house when it’s chilly outside, but because it’s actually the best time to get one. Why? Because when temperatures drop and there is less moisture in the air, our skin dries out! Chemical peels are great for hyperpigmentation because they remove the top layer of your skin, allowing new healthy skin to form in its place.

In part one of “How to Tackle Hyperpigmentation” we talked about skincare and what products we recommend for you. In part two we will be discussing the different types of peels and what makes them different.

VI PEEL

The Original VI Peel

This VI Peel® is used to improve the appearance of your skin on the face and body. It is perfect for those with:

• sensitive skin

• uneven skin texture or skin tone

• fine lines and wrinkles

• enlarged pores

• keratosis pilaris

• mild sun damage

This peel also gives you a more youthful look because it increases your production of collagen. Another benefit of this peel is that it can help remove precancerous cells!

It contains a blend of powerful ingredients that is suitable for all skin types. It is nearly painless, with no prep time and very little downtime. Most people see results in just one week and it is great for all skin types.

Precision Booster (Best For Hyperpigmentation )

This peel contains a higher concentration of the ingredients found in the original VI Peel.  There are also an additional two boosters, hydroquinone enriched lightening booster and fast acting brightening booster.  It is designed to target irregular pigmentation of the skin, including UV-induced hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post inflammatory induced hyperpigmentation (PIH).

This formula contains the original TCA, Retinoic, Salicylic Acid, Phenol, Vitamin C with the addition of hydroquinone and kojic acid.

Purify (Best for Active Acne)

This formula is used in conjunction with the VI Peel to help get rid of acne, improve skin tone and texture as well as reduce and eliminate bacteria.

You will notice your pores are reduced in size and that your skin is much clearer than before the peel. It helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production to promote firmer younger-looking skin. This formula was designed specifically for acne-prone skin. It has specific ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that help get rid of blemishes and Kojic acid that helps to reduce acne scarring and brighten the skin.

Advanced

VI Peel Advanced is best for ages 40+ and is formulated to combat the signs of aging. It is made from a synergistic blend of ingredients, which give a deeper penetration to soften fine lines and wrinkles. The formula helps enhance collagen stimulation to increase cell turnover and promote a decrease in the loss of elasticity.

SKIN MEDICA®

Illuminize Peel

This 20-minute peel is great for first-time chemical peel patients looking for a gentle, very superficial peel to improve tone and skin texture. You’ll love the Illuminize Peel if you have mild skin imperfections and are looking for more radiant skin. Expect little or no visible peeling and no down time.

Vitalize

This peel helps fight the effects of time, sun damage, and environmental assaults. This powerful yet non-damaging peel can take years off of your skin. It is the perfect peel for you if you have mild to moderate skin conditions including fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, pigment irregularities, and acne.

Rejuvenize ( Best For Hyperpigmentation )

This peel is one of the deepest penetrating chemical peels, going one layer deeper in the skin than the vitalize peel. It's suitable for all skin types and produces noticeable results after only one treatment.

It is appropriate for you if you have moderate to severe skin imperfections due to aging and sun damage. It works to aggressively treat sun damage, melasma, acne scarring, fine wrinkles and pigmentary changes. Due to the penetration level of this peel you can experience some downtime with peeling.

Pigmentation is caused by many things but it is reversible with the right skincare and a peel. Our founder Erin Gordon, MD can help you select the best peel and skincare routine for you!
